Black History Month: Here’s What’s Happening Around Guelph and Waterloo Region!

February marks #BlackHistoryMonth, a time to honour and celebrate the remarkable achievements and rich heritage of Black Canadians and their communities.  

It is an opportunity to reflect on the profound contributions Black Canadians have made in supporting the growth of this country.  

Throughout this month, we will share valuable resources, inspiring stories, and spotlight clients who continue to make an impact. 

If you are in the Guelph or Waterloo Region, check out our curated list of resources, events, and organizations to support #BlackHeritageMonth! 

1. “Legacy and Triumph!” – A Black History Month Celebration:

2. Support Black Businesses in Canada 

Want to check out some Black-Owned Businesses? Explore the Canada Black-Owned Business & Black Entrepreneurs Directory—Afrobiz to find amazing entrepreneurs and businesses near you! 

3. University of Guelph – Black History Month: Putting Name to Face: 

Join the University of Guelph’s Office of Teaching and Learning in celebrating Black History Month with an exhibit dedicated to honouring past and contemporary Black education practitioners in the Guelph, Wellington, and Waterloo regions. The exhibit will be displayed on thefirst floor of McLaughlin Libraryand available for viewing fromMonday, Feb. 3, to Friday, Feb. 7, 2025. Learn more about it here.

4. Black Entrepreneurship Program – Black Entrepreneurship Program:

The Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) is a partnership between the Government of Canada, Black-led business organizations, and financial institutions. With an investment of up to $265 million over four years, it will help Black Canadian business owners and entrepreneurs grow their businesses and succeed now and into the future.

5. Guelph Black Heritage Society: Exploring the Additional and Invisible Labour of Navigating the World Being Black with Giselle Jones – Saturday February 15, 2025 @ 11am, Heritage Hall. 

Giselle will discuss the additional and invisible labour of navigating the world as a Black person and the tremendous resilience and power born from both intergenerational and lived experience. She will also invite and instruct participants on how to embrace “micro moments” of mindfulness throughout the day, which is the most accessible practice for busy people. Click to learn more.

6. Waterloo Public Library: Historical Bingo  

It is BINGO time! In recognition of Black History Month, test your luck at a chance to win one of four prizes as we learn more about monumental moments in Canadian Black history and Black Canadians making history today—no previous knowledge is required.
